JOB SUMMARY: Because this is a leave replacement position, the contract is for the 2024-25 school year only.

This position performs duties relating to the communication needs and education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, under the direction of the classroom teacher.  The primary mode of communication is Signing Exact English (SEE).

 

Full time sign language interpreter: Signing Exact English (SEE) preferred, followed by Pidgin Signed English (PSE) a.k.a. Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) interpreter 6th grade student attending Kenmore Middle School, going to general education classes and special education classes {Mid-Level}. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved. 

  1. Interpret classroom instruction and communication, including large group and individual instruction.
  1. Interpret for special events such as assemblies, field trips and test administration as appropriate.
  1. Facilitate communication between students and their peers using sign language.
  1. Follow the Code of Professional Standards for interpreters as established by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

                                                  

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the building principal, and Special Education administrators in conjunction with classroom teachers.

                                                                                                 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works with hearing-impaired student in a classroom setting, in a pull-out situation, and throughout the school campus.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience  

Requires signing fluency by RID certification, graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program and/or proficiency in a district-designed evaluation.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to interact with special needs students in a warm and understanding manner; ability to consistently follow the directions of certificated staff and any written learning/behavior plans; ability to work cooperatively with other District staff, students, and parents; ability to supervise special needs students using appropriate behavior management techniques; ability to demonstrate reading, writing, and math skills and provide academic instruction; ability to maintain the confidentiality of student information; ability to provide basic clerical support; and willingness to attend additional training as directed.

SALARY Salary is based upon the current 2023-24 ESP Salary Schedule Salary (Level II); placement on the salary schedule will be determined by Human Resources DOE. FLSA Non-Exempt. Please note: the 2023-24 salary schedule will be used for placement until the 2024-25 salary schedule is released.


WORK YEAR   192 days per year, 6.5 hours per day.
