JOB SUMMARY

This position is for a Journey-level Technician (Bus Mechanic) with the ability to perform inspections, diagnosis and repair of a variety of equipment to include and not limited to: school buses, trucks, cars, trailers, generators and gas and diesel engines and equipment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved. 

  1. Assist in roadside repairs.
  2. Perform general tune-ups using appropriate diagnostic tools and instruments necessary to accurately determine the reason for part or component failure.
  3. Repair and/or replace various body components on vehicles and preventative maintenance.
  4. Use safety equipment and personal protection devises.
  5. Maintain accurate records (electronic and manual) of inspections and replacements.
  6. Complete and files forms and reports.
  7. Document labor, parts, and supplies for each job in appropriate program.
  8. Assist in the cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room, and other maintenance facilities.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The selected individual will work with colleagues in a collaborative manner as a positive team builder and will promote high standards, positive attitudes, and shop safety in all work-related areas. Candidate performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Maintenance Foreman.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires the physical ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, lift 100 pounds with assistance, and push/hold 150 pounds with assistance, reach above shoulder height, climb ladders, use hand tools, and work in confined spaces and at heights. The mechanic may be exposed to the following environmental conditions: wet and humid (weather and non-weather related), toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles, vibrations, and working near moving mechanical parts. Loud noise is typical in the work environment of this position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

Education and Experience

The successful applicant will be a journey level automotive technician with at least three years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy and light -duty vehicles and have a high school diploma, vocational/technical school certification or equivalent education.

  1. Ability to apply knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, and specifications relating to motor vehicles:
  • Drive a school bus and other district vehicles.
  • Operate all district vehicles with automatic and manual transmissions
  • Recognize safety hazards and work safely.
  1. Ability to apply knowledge of motor vehicle operation, repair, and maintenance:
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Make appropriate and effective repairs.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machines required for performing repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Must have the ability and desire for ongoing professional development.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Required to possess a set of auto mechanic hand tools, both metric and SAE, and a storage cabinet. This position is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing as provided by district policy #5202P. Must possess (or quickly obtain) and maintain the following:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License. Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License that includes a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement with an Air Brake restriction removed within 60 days.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Valid DOT medical examination card.

 

Salary Salary is $43.67 per hour.  Salary is based upon the current 2023-24 Bus MechanicbSalary Schedule; FLSA Non-Exempt.


Work Year: 8.0 hours per day; 260 days per year.
