JOB SUMMARY

This position functions under the direction of a custodial supervisor, building administrator, and/or head custodian and provides custodial services at an assigned building site. The primary focus is on health, cleanliness and safety.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved.  Duties may vary from position-to-position or school-to-school based on the employee(s) specific assignment.

  1. Performs routine cleaning and minor maintenance of assigned areas.                                                         Classrooms:  cleans white boards, sinks, furniture; vacuums carpets; dusts; empties trash; and performs other cleaning duties.
     Restrooms:  cleans and disinfects sinks, urinals, toilets and shower/locker areas; cleans chrome, mirrors, partitions; fills dispensers; empties trash; sweeps and mops floors; and performs other cleaning duties.
  2. Moves furniture and assists with preparation for special events in the school.
  3.  Maintains security of building.
  4.  Reports needed repairs, safety hazards, or other conditions that could affect school health, safety, security, or energy conservation.
  5.  Helps co-workers when requested, if possible.
  6.  Performs minor maintenance such as unplugging toilets and changing light bulbs.
  7.  Cleans and maintains equipment in work area.
  8.  Performs major, non-routine cleaning as part of summer cleaning teams.
  9.  Practices energy conservation.
  10.  Performs other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Evaluated by Custodial Supervisor.  Reports to Custodial Supervisor, Facility Manager and building Administrator.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works in a school environment; may experience frequent interruptions; may be required to deal with distraught or angry people. This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.  May require repetitive motion, bending, kneeling and stooping.  Must have the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle/work with various materials and objects.  Must have physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.  The workplace has exposure to varying levels of dust, fumes from cleaners and other hazardous and/or unpleasant conditions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience

A minimum of 6 months recent successful work experience.  Previous experience involving the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of basic institutional cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques; Displays knowledge of procedures to assist in building use activities; Displays knowledge of, and follows, the Custodial Procedures Manual; Knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment; Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures; Displays and applies basic computer knowledge in daily tasks, i.e., E-mail, etc; Ability to accept assignments in a positive manner; Ability to work under minimal supervision; Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and other non-routine occurrences; Ability to follow specific instructions and district policies and procedures; Ability to perform moderately medium to heavy manual activities; Ability to efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies and equipment; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to determine priorities and to follow a time schedule that results in adequate  completion of work; Ability to be self-motivated and to be thorough and organized in accomplishing work; Ability to maintain effective work relationships with students, staff, and public, including meeting and dealing effectively with groups using school facilities. Ability to present self as a positive role model, maintaining good personal appearance and hygiene and displaying good work habits, including meeting attendance standards. 


Salary
Salary is based upon the current 2023-24 Custodian Salary Schedule; Placement for all Northshore new custodian hires is Step 1. FLSA Non-Exempt.

Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package, for eligible positions. Generally, you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
