JOB SUMMARY

This position safely transports students to and from school and activities.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved. 

  1. Transports students between pickup points and schools or other activities according to established schedules and routes.
  2. Complies with state laws and local regulations pertaining to operation of school buses.
  3. Maintains order on the bus and adheres to safety rules while performing driving duties and functions, including when loading and unloading pupils.  Exercises responsible leadership of students at all times.
  4. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections for mechanical defects and needed repairs and reports to appropriate supervisor immediately.
  5. Cleans and maintains school bus interiors and exteriors; fuels buses as necessary.
  6. Keeps records as required.
  7. Promptly reports accidents, student misconduct, mechanical or other trouble with bus, traffic hazards along route, and parent concerns to the proper authorities.
  8. Discharges and picks up students only at authorized stops.
  9. Takes direction and instruction regarding safe driving procedures as required to fulfill functions and responsibilities.
  10. Installs chains on buses and takes them off as necessary.
  11. Performs related duties that are consistent with this job description and the employee's assignment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Director of Transportation

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Operates school bus in all types of weather conditions; requires ability to squat, bend, reach, and climb ladders; ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted; ability to sit for prolonged periods of time; ability to work overtime as needed.  Exposed to fuel and vehicle fumes and moderate to loud noises from vehicle or children. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Familiarity with vehicle maintenance concepts.

 

Ability to learn and apply safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation. 

 

Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

 

Ability to read and interpret road and street maps and follow assigned schedules.

 

Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations and conditions.

 

Ability to work effectively with school age children and youth.

 

Ability to follow District guidelines for student behavior management.

 

Ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and public at large.

 

Ability to make decisions quickly and use good judgment.

 

Ability to use two-way radios in a courteous and professional manner.

 

Licenses/Special Requirements

Must be at least 21 years of age.   Required to possess and maintain all certificates, licenses, endorsements, and permits as required for this position by state and local authorities (including valid Washington State Drivers License which meets driving record standards).

 

Salary: Salary is based upon the current 2023-24 Bus Driver Salary Schedule; Placement for all Northshore new McKinney Vento bus driver hires is Step 1. FLSA Non-Exempt.

Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package, for eligible positions. Generally, you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
